Press Release of EMU President Prof.Dr.Ufuk Taneri on the occasion of June 26 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

In the message EMU President Prof. Dr. Ufuk Taneri published on the occasion of June 26 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, stated that substance abuse and addiction has become one of the major threats against the health and safety of humanity adding the use of drugs has become very widespread especially among the youth in our country as well. She added she was deeply sorry for this situation. Prof.Dr.Ufuk Taneri also stated that substance abuse and dependence were phenomena that could have deep biological, psychological and social impact on everyone and especially the youth in our country and in other parts of the world. She said June 26 should not be the only day this great health problem was remembered but the fight against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking should be continuous and added the damage drug use and substance dependence could cause in the human mind and body should be explained to the youth.

Prof. Dr. Ufuk Taneri reminded that the United Nations by resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. However, Taneri mentioned the fact that the events organized to remind people of the harmful effects of drug use and substance addiction should not just be limited to one day. Prof. Taneri also stated that EMU was aware of its responsibilities toward the society and therefore attached great significance to community service. President Taneri added departments organized various academic and/or social activities, conferences, seminars to raise drug abuse awareness among the students and the public.

EMU President Prof. Dr. Ufuk Taneri last but not least stated that it was the responsibility of every individual to create a clean, green and livable environment and asked everyone to make progress towards a brighter future.
