Eastern Mediterranean University President Prof.. Dr. Ufuk Taneri released a message on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Maritime and Cabotage Day that has been celebrated since the adoption of the Law on Cabotage (number 815) on July 1, 1926. Prof. Dr.Taneri said that the Cabotage Law carried significance as the victory won at seas by the Turkish nation under the leadership of Ataturk in the War of Independence and the establishment of the national sovereignty led to the enactment of this Law. Prof. Taneri added motherland Turkey and the TRNC both held strategically important positions and therefore we have to benefit form the seas surrounding us as efficiently as possible. According to the Law on Cabotage, the Seafarers of Turkish ships shall be Turkish citizens and marine traffic shall only be allowed to ships bearing the Turkish flag while it prohibits boats bearing foreign flags and also foreign personnel to work in maritime transport in Turkish territorial waters. Stating that Law on Cabotage made it possible for the maritime sector to develop, Taneri continued by saying, “we need to do whatever needs to be done so as to benefit fully from the seas and improve maritime industry. Adoption of the Law on Cabotage is historical turning point for the National Maritime sector and marine trade. Globalization demands us claim the ownership of our seas and attach the necessary significance and give priority to marine works.” Prof. Taneri reminding of what the Great Turkish Leader Ataturk had said, “We have to adopt Maritime matters as the national mission of the Turkish nation, and we need to achieve this within shortest possible time.” congratulated the July 1st Maritime and Cabotage Day of all those who contributed to the development of the Marine Sector, the seafarers, and all our citizens and wished every success to the employees in the sector.
