The EMU robotics teams competed at the competition section of the 2nd International Joint Robotics Competition and Symposium (IJRCS 2009) held from 20 May till 24 May at Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey. EMU co-organized the event in association with Suleyman Demirel, Sakarya, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Atılım Universities (Turkey), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland), K. N. Toosi University of Technology (Iran), and Moscow State University (Russia). 160 contestants participated in the event in 60 teams. Competition took place in five categories, namely, line following, mini sumo fight club, mini sumo team, sumo fight club, and free style categories.
The EMU robotics teams under the leadership of Dr. Atilla Elçi (Assoc. Prof., Computer Engineering) consisted of the following nine EMU students: Behnam Rahnama (PhD, Computer Eng.), Ramin Bakhshi (MSc, Electrical Eng.), Engin Akbulut (BSc, Computer Eng.), Hamid Mir-Mohammad Sadeghi (MSc, Mathematics), Arjang Ahmadi (BSc, IT), Onur Eral (BSc, Electrical Eng.), Peyman Aghajamaliaval (MSc, Electrical Eng.), Mohamad Taghdisi (MSc, IS), and Mecit Altay (BSc, Civil Eng). The joint projects of Semantic Robotics Team and the Robotics Club under supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atilla Elçi won the following three prizes:
- The prestigious Jury’s Award, namely, the "Special Prize for Technical Merit", for their "Cooperative Labyrinth Discovery- Client Robots Project"; a scan of the plaque is attached;
- The Second Place in "Mini Sumo Teams" by the "Faithful Robots" Team; and
- The Third Place in "Free Style" project category by the "Security Robot".
EMU Robotics is already looking forward to the follow up event IJRCS 2010 Robotics Competition.
